30 Days Of Night DVD Review

Synopsis - For 30 days every winter, the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska is plunged into a state of complete darkness. It’s a bitter time when most of the inhabitants head south. This winter, a mysterious group of strangers appear: bloodthirsty vampires. Led by the sinister Marlow (Danny Huston), the merciless vampires take advantage of the uninterrupted darkness to feed on the residents remaining in town. Barrow’s Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George), and an ever-shrinking group of survivors must do anything they can to last until daylight in 30 Days of Night.

The scary vampire movie is back, and with a bang!

I must admit I was surprised when I first watched ‘30 Days Of Night’. I really wasn’t expecting it to be quite so scary or unnerving. Atmospheric, dark and tense, I was on the edge of my seat. One thing I would recommend is not watching it with the lights off, unless you really want to be freaked out.

The premise, vampires attack a town in Alaska where the sun doesn’t shine for 30 days, is one of those ideas you really wish you’d have come up with first. Once you’ve heard it, it seems obvious and surprising that no-one used it before now.

Yes, there are cliches. There are the usual stereotypical characters you find in most horror movies, however they’ve managed to give them a bit more depth than usual. You do care about the characters and their plight.

Josh Hartnett and Melissa George perform admirably, with Hartnett giving one of his better performances. However the cast stand out is Danny Huston as the villainous Marlow. He is literally evil personified and the most convincingly scary vampire I have ever seen on screen.

David Slade pulls out all the stops, with some brilliant direction and creepy camera angles. The gore is toned just right, and the most impressive shot has to be the overhead pan of the town as the vampires feast on the townsfolk.

This is a vampire movie that doesn’t suck, and that is a rarity. Intense and Horrific, we have an all new reason to fear the dark!

The DVD comes with numerous ‘Making Of’ documentaries, detailing almost every aspect of the production. It’s well worth watching these if you are interested in how movies are put together, as these are all informative and of a better than usual quality for DVD extras.

Amber Heard Interview - Never Back Down

Q - Why should we go and see Never Back Down?

AMBER HEARD - Well, it’s a sneak peak into a world that we’re ordinarily not invited into. It exists in an underground high school of fighters who want to release all that teen angst and aggression towards the society that bred them. They just come together and form these fight clubs. Sean Farris plays the lead character, Jake, who’s uprooted from his Middle American upbringing and thrown into this fast-paced society. It’s sexy, entertaining and exciting as he goes on this journey to find himself. He needs me. We fall in love. And I have a similar journey, but in a different direction. We just grow off one another and become different people in the end. It’s like Fast & the Furious meets Karate Kid. And it has a really important moral lesson to be learned.

Q - Which is?

AH - Never back down! It’s about picking your fight, learning it and winning it. It’s also done in an entertaining and sexy way. It’s memorable.

Q - It’s a mixed martial movies. That seems very popular in the US right now…

AH - It’s not a world that I’m very involved in myself! I can’t give up my high-heel addiction.

The Greatest Car Chases In Science Fiction

Car chases are woven deep into the DNA of movies, says crime writer Elmore Leonard. Youngblood #1 receives 2nd printing

Press Release

With YOUNGBLOOD's return to Image Comics being reordered at an exponential rate, Image Comics has gone back to press to ensure copies are available for the foreseeable future.

"We anticipated a high level of interest in Joe and Derec's work on YOUNGBLOOD, but we were frankly caught off-guard by the amount of advance reorders the book generated as press time drew closer," said Image Executive Director Eric Stephenson. "We're thrilled with what the guys are doing with the book, though, and want to make sure copies are available for everyone interested in checking it out."

The new YOUNGBLOOD comes courtesy of THE LAST DEFENDER's Joe Casey and GREEN ARROW's Derec Donovan, who previously worked together for a sixteen-issue run on ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, while being overseen and featuring variant covers by series creator Rob Liefeld. YOUNGBLOOD marks Casey's second acclaimed relaunch of an Image classic. With WILDCATS, Casey was praised for upgrading the original concepts with a post-modern spin. Similarly, YOUNGBLOOD's new direction combines the bombastic beginnings of Liefeld's celebrity heroes such as Shaft and Badrock with the more classic approach developed by Alan Moore, featuring new heroes such Johnny Panic and Doc Rocket and Casey's own sensibilities.

In addition, a limited, black and white Rob Liefeld variant cover will be made available on as a 1-in-4 cover for retailers ordering the second printing.

YOUNGBLOOD #1 2nd (DEC078061), a 32-page comic book for $2.99, will be available in stores January 30th, 2008.

Allow me to introduce myself....

Allow me to introduce myself....

I am Chance. I am a writer and an artist. That is pretty much all I'm going to say about myself.

On this blog, I'm going to talk about pretty much anything. I'll review movies, post bits of news I find interesting and update you on the things I'm doing. Eventually, I may even tell you a bit more about myself, more personal items, but for the moment I'm going to remain pretty anonymous.

Anyway, that's it for now. Enjoy your day.
